Saluting Our Veterans and Service Dogs 🇺🇸

November 11th has rolled around again, and the red, white, and blue is flying strong in honor of our nation’s more than 20 million veterans.

With it comes a stark reminder that freedom’s cost often leaves its warriors with lasting scars, with much of the damage invisible to the naked eye. A 2014 report from the U.S. Department of Defense estimated that 20 veterans die by suicide every day. The government and many nonprofits have been working on ways to help bring this number down, with many advocating for the usage of service dogs as a way to treat veterans with issues like PTSD or other anxiety problems.

Since 2014, K-9 Care of Montana has worked to unite free service dogs with wounded warriors -

Dogs have been placed with veterans in Bigfork,Great Falls, Valier, Marion, Missoula, Helena, Butte, Bozeman, Livingston, and Billings.

U.S. Army veteran Scott Forman told the Cut Bank Pioneer earlier this year that the organization has been pivotal in managing the stress that accompanied the trauma he went through in several overseas deployments. He received a service dog named Jake.

“Jake and the K9 Care Montana family has been a life-changing event in my life,” Scott Forman said. “They were there to help me become closer with my family and friends. Jake provides me with a sense of security and purpose in life again. He goes everywhere with me–all the time.”

A recent fundraiser in Valier raised just shy of $30,000 for the organization.

“We raised over 20 K in a town of 500 people with 250 people in attendance,” the organization wrote on its webpage. “On behalf of K9 Care Montana and our wounded warrior service dog teams: "Together we make a difference.”
